CLARK COUNTY – Clark County authorities have identified the highway workers killed and injured by a reported drunk driver Aug. 8, in the town of Hendren.

According to the Clark County Sheriff’s Department, Russell Opelt and David Murphy responded to reports of a downed tree on County Highway G, near Mann Road in the town of Hendren. The Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call shortly after 1 a.m. from Murphy, saying that he had been hit by a motorist.

When deputies arrived on scene, they discovered that a vehicle was traveling south on Highway G and struck the 60-year-old Murphy and the 57-year-old Opelt. Murphy is being treated for his injuries. Opelt was pronounced dead at the scene.

The operator of the vehicle, 28-year-old Cory Neumueller, was arrested for causing injury and homicide by the Intoxicated use of a vehicle. He is currently in the Clark County Jail awaiting his initial appearance.

The Greenwood Area Ambulance and Fire Department, the Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Clark County Sheriff’s and Coroner’s Offices responded to the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.
