Meet UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield Student: Mariela Urbina
Age: 19
Hometown: Granton
High school attended: Granton High School
Current program or major: Nursing
Why did you choose UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield?
I chose UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield mainly because of the affordable cost, and I was able to stay close to home for my first two years of college. My youngest nephew was born during my senior year of high school, and I knew I had to stay close to home to spend time with him.
What surprised you the most about the university when you arrived on campus?
I was surprised by the support and help you get from faculty and staff. As a smaller campus, you get many one-to-one interactions with professors, which is a huge perk. I felt very welcomed during my first year on campus, and I am happy to be back for my second year.
How or when did you discover your purpose? How did UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield faculty/staff help?
I discovered my purpose during high school. After taking medical-related courses for fun that is when I knew I wanted to go into the medical field. Not only was I interested in learning about human anatomy, but I also wanted to help others, which is a very rewarding feeling.
Why did you choose your program/major?
After seeing one of my nephews spend time in an intensive care unit, I became very appreciative of the nurses who took care of him around the clock. Although I know nursing is not an easy career, I know it holds a lot of responsibilities and changes lives. I want to be there for families and help them during tough times.
Who has been your favorite professor or staff member?
My favorite instructors are biology professor Laura Lee and chemistry professor Dana Haagenson. They are very passionate about their work and are always there when you need help. My favorite staff member is Ashley Masephol. She does an amazing job coordinating student organizations and encouraging students to be involved on campus.
In addition to being a college student, what takes up your free time?
I like to go shopping, going out to eat and spending time with family and friends. I also enjoy trying out new coffee shops wherever I go. If I am not studying, I work at a memory care facility. I enjoy being able to help the residents. It is heartwarming when they tell you they appreciate everything you do.
What do you plan to do after attending UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield?
After completing my associate degree, I plan to enroll in the UW-Eau Claire nursing program. Once I complete my bachelor’s degree, I hope to specialize in a neonatal department. Eventually I plan to earn a master’s degree to become a neonatal nurse practitioner.
To make the most of their college experience, what advice do you have for incoming students?
College can be stressful at times so make sure you set aside time for yourself to relax. You do better when you take care of yourself.
