Pittsville community rallies around its senior class

PITTSVILLE – A small movement by the parents of Pittsville’s graduating seniors has grown into a full community effort.

“What started off as a small effort from parents to show support to our senior students simply by decorating our porches, front doors, and/or windows (‘Seniors on our Porches’) has grown quickly into a community effort,” said Stephanie Durrant, mother of Pittsville Class President Helen Durrant. “We have fantastic parents trying to fill that void between the now – what should have been filled with memories of senior ‘lasts’ – to graduation time. The ideas and efforts, care and concern, of the senior parents is a positive display of the kind of children they have raised.”

Pittsville businesses have joined in, decorating their storefronts as well.

“Community members, some that do not have a high school senior, some that do not even have students in the school system, have already joined in on the fun by decorating their windows or doors while others are still making preparations to express their support,” Durrant said.

“The Pittsville School District has been very supportive of any efforts made to focus on our Class of 2020 Seniors starting with welcoming ideas on how to help the parents support their seniors while simultaneously starting to plan for the graduation of our future graduates.

“Living in a small community certainly has its advantages, and it’s really the small things that matter – the kind gestures, extended hands that are not always handing out money to show they care.  They are extended hands quietly busy in the privacy of their homes or in the quietness of their businesses doing something kind for a small group of wonderful students.”
