Getting involved: Dan Zirngible
Getting involved highlights area individuals who give of themselves for others. By volunteering, these individuals help provide for and nurture the community in large or small ways.
Meet Dan Zirngible, who has volunteered with the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Central Wisconsin since May of 2019.
The Marshfield area resident said he came to the program because he had two boys and “enjoyed their younger years when teaching them different things and experiences.”
He learned of the BBBS program and their need for “Bigs” while attending a church service.
“I was at church and they mentioned that they were looking for Bigs,” he explained. “They talked about 14 Littles on the waiting list. I checked about six months later and there was still a long waiting list so I applied to be in the program. I want to pass on my skills and with being retired, I have the time.
“Ethyn is my Little. He is smart, funny, and aggressive when doing things (playing games, finishing projects, etc.) He has the desire to finish what he starts and has a good head on his shoulders.”
Zirngible said that he recommends the program that matches a youth with an adult mentor, stating that it is important to the community to get involved in this way.
“The way kids are being treated today and that they come from a variety of backgrounds. Kids need a positive person in their life and if they don’t have that, they may not be able to fully be who they can be,” he added. “Young kids these days are still good. With everything that goes on, the good ones are still out there.”
