Area girls teams continue regional action

MARSHFIELD – Area girls basketball teams competed in the first and second rounds of regional competition.
Greenwood girls
Greenwood traveled to Flambeau on Feb. 25 to take on the higher seed for round one. Greenwood advanced with a 66-57 win.
Greenwood then played Prairie Farm on Feb. 28 for a Division 5 regional semifinal game where they fell, 78-45, to end their season.
Loyal girls
Loyal hosted New Auburn, and Loyal easily took the win over New Auburn, 74-28, on Feb. 25.
Remi Geiger led her team in scoring, hitting four 3-pointers on her way to 24 points. Savannah Schley put up 15 points; Natasha Tellock hit 13 points; and Katlyn Lindner hit three 3-pointers and added 12 points of her own.
Loyal then hosted Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran on Feb. 28 in a Division 5 regional semi-final game and easily won the game. The final score was 74-38.
Loyal-Prairie Farm
On Feb. 29, Loyal faced the Prairie Farm team for the regional championship game. Loyal made quick work on the scoreboard and won 70-55. The regional champion Loyal girls team will face Clear Lake at Colfax High School on March 5.
Columbus girls
Columbus Catholic moved onto the Division 5 regional semifinals, after a win at home on Feb. 25 against Gilmanton.
The first half of the game was a battle with the Dons taking a small lead of 17-14. Columbus overpowered Gilmanton 35-18 to win the game 52-32.
Columbus was led by Meghan Kibbel, scoring 14 points, and Annika Brown added 11 for the Dons.
Columbus faced Eleva-Strum in second round action on Feb. 28. The Dons end their season after losing to the Eleva-Strum team, 59-40.
Stratford-Spencer-Auburndale-Colby girls
Stratford and Spencer faced off on Feb. 25 at Stratford High School where the Tiger girls took a 50-30 win over the Rockets.
Breanna Ackley scored 21 points for the Tigers, with Emily Hughes adding 13.
Spencer’s Heavyn Kind was high for her team with eight points.
Stratford moved on to face Auburndale, who had a first round bye. Auburndale dominated the game and the second half was a 3-point frenzy for the Apaches girls, who won the game 47-30.
After a first round bye, Colby hosted Pacelli on Feb. 28 for a Division 4 regional semifinal. Colby had an 11-point lead at the half but Pacelli made a second half charge and won the road game over Colby, knocking the 2019 state qualifiers out of the postseason. The final score was 56-52.
The Auburndale girls moved on to host Pacelli for the regional championship game on Feb. 29. Auburndale had been knocked out by Pacelli the past two years in regional play. Auburndale was leading the game until half way through the second half when Pacelli started a run and ended up winning by two points over Auburndale, 48-46.
Abbotsford girls
The Abbotsford girls team headed to Necedah on Feb. 25 and ended post-season play as Necedah won the regional game, 57-14.
Neillsville girls
Neillsville hosted Cadott in Division 4. The Warrior girls walked away with the win, 50-25 to move onto the regional final game.
Neillsville-Osseo met Osseo-Fairchild on Feb. 29. The Warriors were able to maintain a good lead throughout the game and grabbed the regional championships with a 54-43 win.
Neillsville will face Melrose-Mindoro at Eau Claire Memorial High School on March 5 for the first round of sectional competition.
Marshfield girls
Marshfield hosted Superior on Feb. 28 in Division 1. Superior started the game by hitting some three-point shots and took an early lead over the Tigers. Marshfield was able to keep up with the Spartans but couldn’t grab the lead. The Marshfield team lost the regional game, 64-55, to end their season.
