WISCONSIN RAPIDS – A 25-year-old Wisconsin Rapids man accused of homicide by the intoxicated use of a vehicle has pleaded innocent. Zachary Koosmann entered the plea to the felony charges on Dec. 9 in Wood County Circuit Court.

In addition to entering the plea, Koosmann’s attorney also requested a new judge. It’s unclear why the request for substitution was made.

The charges stem from an incident on Aug. 4, along Whitrock Avenue. Koosmann hit Marshfield native Melissa Piesik from behind with his pickup truck while she was riding her bike. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary breath test done at the scene of the crash indicated Koosmann had a blood alcohol level of point-one-nine (0.19) – more than twice the legal limit for intoxication.

No further court dates were scheduled for Koosmann.
