Colby stops Columbus in conference opener

MARSHFIELD – With both teams coming off wins, the Columbus Dons and Colby Hornets met in a Cloverbelt Conference matchup in high school girls basketball on Nov. 26 at Columbus Catholic High School in Marshfield.

The Dons jumped out to an early lead, but the Hornets closed the gap to just one by halftime, then used a 34-27 second-half run to come from behind and beat the Dons 55-49.

The Hornets, coming off a conference championship and a state tournament appearance a season ago, improved their Eastern Cloverbelt Conference record to 2-0, while the Dons fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Colby was led by senior Hailey Voelker with 27 points and eight rebounds. Lexi Underwood added 14 points. Emma Peavey scored six points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

Columbus Catholic was led by Addison Baierl with 23 points. Emmalee Jicinsky added 11 and Meghan Kibbel added seven.

Columbus then went 0-2 at the Cranberry Classic at Assumption High School Nov. 29-30 in Wisconsin Rapids, losing to Assumption and Nekoosa.

Columbus is back in action Dec. 5 in a Cloverbelt Conference matchup with the Rockets in Spencer. The Dons will then host Granton and Owen-Withee Dec. 10 and 13.

Colby will host Owen-Withee on Dec. 5, followed by a road game at Gilman on Dec. 10.
