MARSHFIELD – The UWSP at Marshfield Marauders traveled to UWGB Manitowoc to kick off the 2019-2020 season on Nov. 9, and came away with a thrilling victory 89-88.

The Marauders fell behind early 29-13, but settled in and battled back.  They were able to draw even briefly, before going into halftime trailing 47-43.

With a strong start to the second half, the Marauders were able to build an 11-point lead with only 3:35 left to play.  A few missed shots and untimely turnovers let the Blue Devils creep back into the game, cutting the lead to five with 2:50 left to play.

The Blue Devils were able to get it within two, but late layup by Joey Miller (Columbus Catholic) and a free throw from Matthew Roth (Colby), the Marauders were able to hold off the Blue Devils.

A three point shot fell at the buzzer for the Blue Devils, to bring the final deficit to one.  The Marauders were led by returning WCC West Player of Year, Jack Bezlyk (Spencer), with 20 points, 23 rebounds, four assists, and four steals.  Miller chipped in with 14 points and nine rebounds; Roth added 14 points and 4 assists; and Ethan Posteluk (Marshfield High School) had 11 points and four assists.

The Marauders next game is Nov. 13, at UWSP at Wausau.  Game time is set for 7:15 p.m.
