MARSHFIELD – In Marshfield, the Veterans Day observance includes a trip to the senior and assisted-living facilities around the area to visit veterans and say “Thanks for your service.”

That’s according to Michael Feirer from Marshfield’s American Legion Post 54, who says they’re taking their Veterans Day ceremony to the vets.  “We’re going to Atrium post-acute care to put a small program on for the veterans that are in the facility.  And then we’re going to the Astor assisted-living.  At 2 p.m. we’re going to Stoney River’s memory care, and at 2:45 we’re going to Three Oaks.”

Since the end of World War II, Feirer says Veterans Day in Marshfield always includes a ceremony in Veterans Park, at the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month.  “At 11:00 we’re going to meet at Veterans Park, and we’re going to do the usual 11th hour program to recognize veterans at the memorial there.”

To help start the festivities on Saturday, Marshfield’s American Legion Post 54 served original ‘Army Stew’ to veterans and their families and named a ‘Veteran of the Year.’
