WOOD COUNTY – The Wood County area saw heavy damage as two lines of severe storms went through the area July 19-20.

Heavy rain, violent winds, and downed trees left thousands without power. Uprooted trees also pulled up gas lines, causing leaks.

Wisconsin Rapids was one of the hardest hit areas in the county, with the Wisconsin Rapids Water Works & Lighting reporting nearly 70 poles damaged or broken and several hundred trees on lines.

The National Weather Service reported nine confirmed tornadoes throughout the two-day weather event, with the nearest a confirmed EF-1 near Mosinee. The tornado uprooted trees, damaged roofs, and destroyed a barn.

Work continues around the clock to repair down power lines, restore power, and remove downed trees in the area.

Utility workers say that some areas may be left without power for multiple days.

For Wisconsin Rapids residents in need of charging for oxygen and C-pap units, resources are available at the Centralia Center. For more emergency information, contact Wood County Emergency Management at 715-421-8500.
