WISCONSIN RAPIDS – A Nekoosa woman was sentenced on July 18 in Wood County Court for the Aug. 5, 2017, death of Marshfield native, Tyler Manthe.

Taylor J. Owczynsky, 25, received four years in prison and four years of extended supervision, with 1,000 hours of community service while sharing her story with high school students, by Wood County Judge Todd Wolf. She will also lose her driver’s license privileges for five years.

According to the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 3:58 a.m. on Aug. 5, authorities responded to a two-vehicle crash in the area of State Highway 13 near Evergreen Avenue in the town of Saratoga. Investigators determined that a southbound vehicle, driven by Owczynsky, crossed over the center line, striking a northbound vehicle, driven by Manthe.

Owczynsky had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.15 percent – almost double the state limit.

Manthe was airlifted to the Marshfield Medical Center with serious injuries. He was later pronounced dead.

Owczynsky was originally charged with two felony counts resulting from the accident. She was found guilty for homicide by use of a vehicle with a PAC. A second charge – homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle – was dismissed.
