MARSHFIELD – Marshfield-based Hewitt’s Meat Processing grabbed six honors at the 2019 Wisconsin Cured Meat Championships, April 5-6 in Middleton. The competition is noted as the “largest competition for small meat processors in the United States.”

The contest saw over 1,000 product entries in 36 categories, including: bacon, bratwurst, ham, smoked poultry, summer sausage, and other meats. About 40 judges, including industry professionals and food scientists, panel the competition.

Hewitt’s won four awards for their Habanero & Mango Bratwurst, Pineapple & Teriyaki Bratwurst, Honey Ham Snack Sticks w/Dried Cranberries, and summer sausage. They also received honorable mentions for their Traditional Snack Sticks and boneless ham.

John and Amanda Franseen operate Hewitt’s Meat. Amanda is the great granddaughter of Marvin and Crystal Hewitt, who started the business in 1939 at a Lindsey location.

According to the Franseens, 99 percent of Hewitt’s products are locally produced, with recipes handed down through multiple generations.
