Tigers’ three-peat attempt falls short

MARSHFIELD – The Stratford Tiger wrestling team fell short in its bid for a third consecutive Division 3 state championship. The Tigers lost to Fennimore 31-24 on, March 2 at the WIAA team wrestling finals at the UW Fieldhouse in Madison. The Tigers were wrestling Fennimore for the fourth straight year in the D-3 finals.
Tiger winners were Trevor Dennee by pin; Max Schwabe by technical fall; Devin Dennee by major decision; and Gavin Drexler, Manny Drexler, and Dylan Schoenherr by decision. Fennimore took four of the final five matches to claim the title.
In the state semifinal round earlier in the day, Stratford dominated Random Lake 41-24. Winners for Stratford were Gavin Drexler and Hunter Ford by pin; Manny Drexler by technical fall; Dillon Kirsch, Jacob Heiden, and Mavrick Licciardi by major decision; Max Schwabe and Logan Peterson by decision; and Trevor Dennee by forfeit.
Fennimore and Stratford have won the last four Division 3 state championships. Fennimore has won titles in 2016 and 2019, with the Tigers winning two straight in 2017 and 2018.
