Weed questions head to Wood County ballot

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Two marijuana referendums are headed to the spring election ballot in Wood County.

Supervisors on Jan. 15 approved the questions –  one asking if medicinal marijuana should be legal for anyone with a doctor’s prescription and the other asking if the recreational use of the drug should be legal for those over the age of 21.

The final vote was 10-7 in favor of moving the questions to the April ballot. The recreational question calls for weed to be taxed and regulated just like alcohol.

Similar to the referendums that were voted on in last November’s mid-Term election, they would hold no law-changing powers, but would serve as a measuring stick for lawmakers on the public’s perception of the proposals.

Municipalities passing non-binding medicinal marijuana questions included Marathon, Portage, Lincoln and Brown Counties. Other counties saw non-binding recreational questions pass, including Dane, La Crosse, and Milwaukee.
