The Hannah Center celebrates 25 years
For the Hub City Times
MARSHFIELD – In Dec.1992, a Marshfield family gave a generous monetary gift to those who held the dream of what was to become The Hannah Center. The directive was to set up a house where a pregnant woman could find refuge, shelter, have a chance for respite, look at her life, and make plans for her future.
On Jan. 19, 1993, 24 individuals met at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. One by one, each was invited to share their observations specific to pregnant women alone in our society. Meetings continued and names for the house were discussed, selecting Hannah after Hannah in I Samuel from the Bible.
The Hannah Center opened its doors in June 1993, serving woman facing crisis pregnancy. In 2011, The Hannah Center Board of Directors and staff realized that the community needs had changed, and expanding the mission to serving any women in crisis, pregnant, single, or parenting.
The Hannah Center’s mission impacts the lives of women and children, breaking the cycles of poverty, abuse, homelessness, and addiction.
