Columbus boys, girls have big wins

MARSHFIELD – The Columbus Catholic boys and girls basketball teams rolled into the middle part of December coming off big conference wins.
On Dec. 13, the Columbus girls gutted out a tough 38-34 overtime win over Gilman at Columbus High School. Addie Baierl led the Dons with 18 points, including a game-tying 3-point basket in the closing seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime.
On Dec. 14, the Columbus boys beat Owen-Withee in Eastern Cloverbelt Conference basketball 66-40.
“It’s a good win,” Columbus Coach Joe Konieczny said after the game. “At Owen-Withee, we historically never really have blowout wins here, but I thought we got a really solid win against a quality opponent.”
Konieczny added, “We were missing Ethan Meece, with his foot (injury). He’s a big loss for us. I think Tommy Nystrom and Jadon Nienast are doing a really great job of figuring some things out. They’ve improved every game. Jadon’s looking more and more comfortable taking the ball to the rim. I still wish both of them would be a little bit more ready to catch and shoot, and a little more confident, but for two guys who don’t have a ton of varsity experience, I think they’re really getting solid.”
Bryce Fuerlinger led Columbus Catholic with a season-high 24 points. Noah Taylor dropped in 17 points. Jarred Mandel added 13 points.
The Columbus boys will host Gilman Dec. 20. The Dons girls will host Loyal Dec. 21.
