Strong December start for Columbus basketball

MARSHFIELD – The Columbus Dons boys and girls basketball teams got off to great starts for the month of December.
The Dons girls went 2-1 in the first week of the month, while the Columbus boys went 2-0.
Both teams had road games Dec. 3. The Columbus boys won at Auburndale 73-54. The Dons were led by Noah Taylor and Jarred Mandel, each with 20 points. Bryce Fuerlinger added 12.
Colton Wright led the Apaches with 19 points. Cooper Weinfurter scored 14, and Carter Wilcott had 12 points and nine rebounds.
That same evening, The Dons’ girls defeated Northland Lutheran 46-38. Addie Baierl led Columbus with 21 points. The next night, Columbus defeated Granton 60-16. The Dons were led by Baierl with 14 points. Maren Seefluth added 10. Kristin Strey had seven points for the Bulldogs. The Dons boys took their turn against Granton on Dec. 6, beating the Bulldogs 82-32. Columbus was led by Taylor and Mandel with 14. Tom Nystrom and Eden Jacobson each had 13. Fuerlinger added 10. Noah McConkey led Granton with 19.
The Columbus girls wrapped up the week with a tough loss at Owen-Withee Dec. 7, losing to the Blackhawks 52-49. Baierl had 16 points for the Dons. Seefluth had 11 and Hailey Roehl added 10. Owen-Withee was led by Jen Wendler with 21. The win was the 698th for Owen-Withee Head Coach Al Guthman. The state record is 699, held by Jim Myers of Barneveld.
The Dons boys play at Owen-Withee on Dec. 14. The Columbus girls host Gilman Dec. 13.
