MARSHFIELD – Stratford native Macey Kilty has added another female wrestling championship to her already-impressive resume. Kilty, 17, worked her way through a field of 16 competitors from around the world to win the United World Wrestling freestyle Cadet National Championship in Zagreb, Croatia, on July 6.
Macey had a total of four matches, and scored two pinfalls, a technical fall, and won the championship by decision.
In round 1 of competition, Kilty defeated Sonika Hooda of India, winning by pinfall in a time of 3:00. In her quarterfinal match, Macey scored a 12-1 technical fall over Anastasiya Alpyeyeva of Ukraine. In the semifinal round, Kilty was up against China’s Mengwei Zhang – this year’s Cadet Asian champion. Macey pinned Zhang in a time of 1:40.
In the championship match, Macey was, again, dominant. She won by decision, 9-3, over Julia Fridlund of Sweden, who was the 2017 Cadet Nordic champion.
Macey first competed at this level in 2016, when she captured the bronze medal at the Cadet World Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia. That followed her appearance at the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament in Madison, wrestling for the Stratford Tigers.
Next up for Macey is the Junior World Championships in Trnava, Slovakia, in September.
