MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Chaparrals baseball team is off to a great start this summer. The Chaps won again on June 10, for their sixth win of the season, versus just one loss.
Marshfield beat Whittlesey 5-3. The Reds took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Chaps answered with single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. The Reds, however, came back to tie the game with a two-run eighth, but a Marshfield rally in the ninth sealed the win.
The Chaparrals loaded the bases for player/manager Justin Rayburn of Pittsville, who smashed a two-run double off the wall in centerfield to give the Chaps a lead they would not surrender. Rayburn was 2-for-4 on the day with a single and double. Pittsville’s Sam Schwanebeck homered for Marshfield; Jeff Kraschewski, Jack Donahue, and Nate McDonald each had a pair of doubles; and Jason Kurth, Nick Meyer and Derek Nichols each had a two-base hit.
The win goes to Kade Lancour, who relieved starter Bobby Pilz in the sixth inning. Lancour got Whittlesey to hit into inning-ending double plays in both the eighth and ninth innings to help secure the win.
Starter Bobby Pilz went five and one-third innings. He gave up one run on four hits while walking nine and striking out five.
The Chaps are scheduled to face Medford on June 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Jack Hackman Field. Marshfield plays at Abbotsford on June 24 at 1:30 p.m.
