Eleanor (Chevalier) “Chevy” Schneider
Eleanor (Chevalier) “Chevy” Schneider of Marshfield passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at Stoney River Assisted Living in Marshfield at the age of 99.
Chevy was born on April 3, 1919 in Virginia, Minnesota to Telesphore and Odile (Champeau) Chevalier and was the 7th of 8 children. She grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin, having moved there at the age of 10, and graduated from East High School in 1937. At age 11, Chevy began singing professionally with a big band on WHBY radio in Green Bay and in her teens was the lead singer with the Bill Carlton big band, also in Green Bay. Singing remained an important part of her life – she served as President of the Marshfield Choral Club and, as President, organized the first Palm Sunday Choir over 57 years ago.
Chevy had three loves in her life: her Catholic faith, her family, and being a homemaker. She and her late husband, George Schneider, were charter members of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Marshfield and were active for many years in Papal Volunteers for Latin America (PAVLA) and the Christian Family Movement (CFM). Chevy and George served as foster parents with Catholic Social Services and over the years cared for over 20 children, four of which became permanent members of the family.
For nearly 20 years Chevy hosted an intercessory prayer group in her home. She was a member of the original Gray Ladies volunteer group at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield and later became a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, serving as a waiting room volunteer for 19 years. She also had served on the Board of the St. Vincent DePaul Society, and was an active member of the Catholic Daughters of America for many years. In her spare time, she and her husband, George, enjoyed playing Bridge, and she was an active participant in a swim group.
Chevy is survived by son Gary (Mary Ann) Schneider of Parker, CO; daughter Gail (Dan) Zirngible of Marshfield; Denise (Todd) Adler of Broomfield, CO; and Laurie Reese of Minneapolis, MN, as well as 5 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandson.
Chevy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 69 years, George Schneider, 7 siblings, and by a foster son, Joseph.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 am on Thursday, June 7, at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Marshfield, with Rev. Daniel Sedlacek officiating. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Marshfield. Visitation will be at the church from 10:00 until the time of the service. Mass will be preceded by recitation of the Rosary at 11:00 am.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Stoney River Assisted Living of Marshfield for their compassionate and attentive care afforded Chevy over the past several years.
Memorial contributions in Chevy’s name may be made to Our Lady of Peace Parish.
