For Hub City Times
MARSHFIELD – In honor of Oral Cancer Awareness Month, Marshfield Clinic, 1000 N. Oak Ave., Marshfield, will offer free oral cancer screenings and oral cancer vaccinations from 1-5 p.m., April 27.
Oral cancer is not a rare disease. Nearly 50,000 people in the country will be diagnosed with oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancers in 2018, according to the American Cancer Society. An estimated 9,700 people will die of these cancers.
Adults with a history of smoking, using chewing tobacco or significant alcohol use should get screened. Anyone with a mouth sore that keeps coming back or has not healed within one month should also get checked.
Oral cancer can often be identified early, and with early detection, survival rates are high and side effects from treatment are at their lowest.
