ATHENS – Stratford had eight individual champions and two runner-up finishes as it rolled to its fifth-straight conference championship at the 2018 Marawood Conference Wrestling Tournament Jan. 27 at Athens High School.
Stratford racked up 280.5 team points to easily outdistance itself from second-place Athens (184) and third-place Edgar (183). Auburndale was sixth with 96 points.
Stratford seniors A.J. Schoenfuss (132 pounds) and Jeremy Schoenherr (145) became the 17th and 18th wrestlers in conference history to win four-straight individual Marawood titles.
Schoenfuss (34-3) pinned Hunter Bruhn of Phillips in 2:50 in the 132-pound championship match, while Schoenherr (25-0) won by technical fall over Jacob Heiden of Edgar 19-3 in the 145-pound title bout.
Junior Manny Drexler (33-2, 106 pounds) and senior Jake Drexler (35-2, 152) won their third consecutive Marawood title for the Tigers, and sophomore Max Schwabe (31-6, 126) earned his second in a row.
Freshman Karter Stuttgen (29-5, 113), sophomore Trevor Dennee (30-4, 170), and junior Dylan Schoenherr (36-2, 220) also won individual titles for Stratford.
Jordan Becker finished second at 160 and Hector Rojas was second at 285, and Kaelen Schmitt took third at 182 for Stratford.
“We were thrilled with how the day went,” Stratford Coach Joe Schwabe said. “We had a few kids filling in for some injured teammates, so getting 10 to the finals and eight champs was great. To have all wrestlers place for us was a nice addition as well.
“From here we need to prepare for our regionals and try to get as many kids as possible to become sectional qualifiers.”
Auburndale to host D3 regional
Dylan Baird had Auburndale’s top finish, taking second at 120 pounds. Baird (23-12) lost to Javyn Freeman of Phillips in the championship match, 9-2.
Isaiah Hasenohrl (23-14, 126), Keller Wolfe (33-6, 170), Austin Low (12-13, 195), and Samuel Hasenohrl (22-15, 285) all placed third for Auburndale.
Auburndale will host the WIAA Division 3 regional on Feb. 10, with Stratford among the teams participating.
