A number of former local high school athletes have moved on to the next level and are playing sports collegiately across the country.

Periodically, this publication will update readers of some of those local athletes’ exploits at the collegiate level.

Kauffman begins career at Eastern Michigan

Mason Kauffman, a 2017 graduate of Stratford High School, is a freshman on the Eastern Michigan University (EMU) wrestling team.

Kauffman, a two-time WIAA state champion at Stratford, is 7-5 for Eagles after competing in three Open tournaments.

Kauffman went 3-2 at the Michigan State Open on Nov. 5 to finish fourth at 157 pounds and was 2-1 at the EMU Open on Nov. 11 to take second place at 157. Both of those tournaments were for freshmen and sophomores only. He also was 2-2 at the Cleveland State Open on Dec. 16.

Among Kauffman’s victories were two major decisions.

Fravert, UW-Oshkosh hit WIAC play

Adam Fravert, a 2016 graduate of Marshfield High School, is a sophomore forward for the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh men’s basketball team.

Fravert has started all 17 games this season for the Titans, who are 13-4 overall and 3-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. He is averaging 13.2 points and a team-best 8.4 rebounds per game, while shooting 51.2 percent from the field and 11 of 39 from 3-point range.

Fravert hit for double figures in the Titans’ past four games, scoring 11 in both of Oshkosh’s wins against UW-Stout on Jan. 10 and UW-River Falls on Jan. 13. He had 10 points and 10 rebounds in a loss to Platteville on Jan. 17, and 13 points in 10 rebounds in a defeat at UW-Eau Claire on Jan. 20.

Oshkosh hosts UW-Stevens Point on Jan. 24 and plays at UW-River Falls on Jan. 27.

Michaelis continues season at Minnesota-Crookston

Caitlin Michaelis, a 2015 graduate of Marshfield High School, is a junior on the University of Minnesota-Crookston women’s basketball team.

Michaelis has started all 18 games this season for the Golden Eagles, who are 5-13 overall and 5-9 in the NCAA Division II Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. She is averaging 11.2 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game this season.

Michaelis scored a season-high 20 points in an 85-74 home win over the University of Mary on Jan. 19. She made 6 of 11 shots from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers, and was 6-for-6 at the free throw line.

Michaelis had 16 points, with three 3-pointers, in a 77-67 loss to Minot State on Jan. 20.

The Golden Eagles play at Minnesota-Mankato Jan. 26 and at Concordia University in St. Paul on Jan. 27, in a pair of NSIC games.
