Richard was born on July 25, 1927 in Marshfield, to Clarence and Wilma (Southard) Kohl and was a 1945 graduate of Marshfield Senior High School. After graduation he entered the United States Navy, during World War II, serving 11 months on a seaplane tender serving between Japan and Hong Kong, China. He was honorably discharged with the rank of 3rd class yeoman in August 1946. He then attended the University of Wisconsin and then Stevens Point Teachers College for 2 years. After a serious car accident in March of 1953 he returned home and later joined the State of Wisconsin Bank Examiners for 6 ½ years. Dick enjoyed visiting cousins in Oregon and California and traveled much throughout the United States and took seven trips to England and Europe. He traveled the last several years with his cherished friend and companion, Audry Bluhm.

He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus and the Fourth Degree Assembly, the Marshfield Elks Club, the Serra Club and was a charter member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.
