William J. Altmann
William J. Altmann, 77, Stratford, died on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Stoney River Memory Care, Marshfield.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Stratford, with Rev. Sengole Vethanayagam officiating. Burial will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in the village of Stratford and military rites will be conducted by the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #6352 of Stratford. The visitation will be held from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Tuesday at Sauter / Rembs Funeral Home, Stratford, and from 10:00 am until service time on Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
William was born on November 22, 1940 in the Town of Cleveland, Marathon County, to Jacob and Agnes (Draxler) Altmann. He attended St. Joseph’s Parochial School and was a graduate of Stratford High School. He was a Veteran of the United States Army serving from 1962 until his honorable discharge in 1964.
Bill had farmed on the home farm in the Town of Cleveland his entire life. He improved and expanded the farm, modernizing it and increasing its productivity. He was very knowledgeable about nature, being familiar with all the different trees, plants, weeds, birds and even the stars. He enjoyed fishing trips to Canada.
He is survived by a brother, Casper Altmann of Marshfield, and 4 sisters, Agnes (James) Koehler of Stratford, RoseMarie “Rosie” Bean of Lake Tomahawk, Mary (Kenneth) Leick of Stratford and Kathleen Richardson of Marshfield. He is further survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Elizabeth Ackerman, brothers-in-law, Glenn Bean and Arnold Richardson.
