PARK FALLS — The Auburndale girls cross country team won its first-ever conference title as it took first place at the 2017 Marawood Conference Cross Country Meet on Thursday.

The Apaches, who finished second at the conference meet a year ago, had their top-five runners all finish in the top 11 to accumulate 33 points and easily claim the Marawood championship. Defending champion Chequamegon was a distant second with 88 points. Stratford was sixth with 170.

Isabella Jewell led Auburndale, finishing fourth in 20:33.4. She was followed by teammates Kali Karl (20:52.2), Erricka Zenner (21:01.4), and Vanessa Mitchell (21:04.3), who finished fifth through seventh, respectively. Anna Kollross ended up 11th in 21:23.2 for the Apaches.

Stratford’s top runner was Kaylee Hollatz, who took 22nd in 22:17.9.

The Auburndale boys finished sixth with 174 points, and Stratford was right behind in seventh with 175 points. Wisconsin Rapids Assumption earned its Marawood Conference title with 50 points, eight ahead of Phillips.

Jed Miller of Phillips won the boys race in 17:09.2, just 0.6 of a second ahead of Assumption’s Sean Dolan.

Isaac Thompson led Stratford, taking 12th in 18:17.7. Auburndale’s top runner was Carl Lundgren, who came in 13th, two seconds behind Thompson.
