WAUSAU — The Marshfield girls tennis team jumped into fifth place overall by taking fifth at the Wisconsin Valley Conference Tournament on Thursday at Wausau East and Wausau West high schools.

The Tigers scored 12 points at the tournament, vaulting ahead of Merrill to finish fifth in the overall conference standings that combine dual meet match wins and tournament victories. Marshfield had been sixth entering the tournament.

Wausau East, the undefeated regular-season champion, won the tournament and earned its first overall WVC title since 2012, ending Stevens Point’s streak of four championships in a row.

Conference champions were Lillie James and Taylor Konczal of Stevens Point at No. 1 doubles; Elizabeth Wentzel and Maggie Negaard of Stevens Point at No. 2 doubles; Elizabeth Boulanger and Zoe Briqvelt-Miller of Wausau East at No. 3 doubles; Stevens Point’s Sabrina Tang at No. 1 singles; and Wausau East’s Savannah Carroll at No. 2 singles, Lea Ratanauwong at No. 3 singles, and Leah Blaskowski at No. 4 singles.

Marshfield’s top finish came from its No. 2 doubles team of Lauren Weigel and Emily Weis. The Tigers’ duo beat Paige Vruwink and Ellie Schuerman of Wisconsin Rapids in a three-set tiebreaker in the third-place match 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).

The No. 3 doubles team of Brooklyn Pillinger and Krupa Patel, Ashley Schultz at No. 1 singles, and Dara Stichert at No. 2 singles all placed fourth for the Tigers after winning first-round matches before losing in the semifinals and third-place matches.

Jabina Devadas was the consolation bracket winner at No. 4 singles for Marshfield.

Marshfield will compete in the WIAA Division 1 subsectional tournament on Monday at Wisconsin Rapids. Sectionals are Oct. 5 at Wausau West.
