MARSHFIELD — Wisconsin Valley Lutheran gave the Marshfield Columbus soccer team all it could handle for a little more than a half, but the Dons finally got their offense clicking and ran away with a 4-1 victory in a Central Wisconsin Conference match Thursday at Griese Park.

The Dons’ powerful offense was held at bay for most of the first half as Wisconsin Valley Lutheran was able to push the ball out of its half of the field time after time.

Coleton Schubring scored on a penalty kick in the 37th minute to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead before the Dons finally got things going.

Evan Dieringer scored off an assist from Zach Olson with 2:23 to go before halftime to tie the game.

After 10 minutes of scoreless soccer, Columbus’ Nadim Torbey countered WVL’s goal with a penalty kick of his own, and less than two minutes later Torbey scored again to put the Dons up 3-1.

Dieringer added a goal on a long kick from the top right corner of the penalty box with 1:49 to go to provide the final margin.

“We needed some more communication on the defensive end, we needed more supportive runs from the forwards, and we cleaned it up in the second half,” Columbus Catholic coach Jeff Edwards said. “The first half was really bad. No one was talking, and we deserved to be tied because we were not playing well.”

With the victory, Columbus (12-3-1, 9-1 CWC) keeps pace with Central Wisconsin Conference leader Amherst/Iola-Scandinavia/Rosholt to remain one-half game out of first place. With four conference games remaining, including a regular-season finale Oct. 13 against the Falcons, Edwards said he is pleased the team is in position to compete for the conference title.

“It will be interesting here,” Edwards said. “If we win out, we can win conference again. It would be nice to do. We’re expecting a good game with Pacelli here on Monday. We’re thankful for Northland Lutheran tying Amherst, and they have to still play them again, so who knows what will happen there.”

Columbus hosts Stevens Point Pacelli on Monday at Griese Park.
