Compassion in Action providing aid in Texas

MARSHFIELD — Marshfield-based disaster relief group Compassion in Action has been collecting donations and planning its next mission.

Donations of money, bottled water, and other supplies were gathered Sept. 2, and organizer Cathie Shilts said they will be delivered when Compassion in Action goes to provide Hurricane Harvey disaster relief assistance in La Grange, Texas, on Sept. 14.

“We were excited that it was a little bit smaller town because the smaller towns can kind of get forgotten in these types of situations, and so, to date, the city is still under water, but we are hoping that within two weeks it will be down by then,” Shilts said.

La Grange is located two hours west of Houston.

Shilts said there are two trip options for volunteers: Sept. 14-18 or Sept. 14-24. The group will be gutting houses, tarping roofs, and providing other assistance.

“It’s a lot of work, but all we have to do is watch one little video, and you see them hurting, and you see them pulling children out from the water, and they are limp, and they have to resuscitate them. Then you don’t care how tired you are or what you have to do to get there. You just know that you have to get there and help them,” Shilts said.

Those interested in signing up for the trip or making a financial contribution should visit mycompassion.info. For additional information contact Cathie Shilts at 715-316-2830.
