Stratford cross country competes at Iola-Scandinavia T-Bird Invitational

Schillinger, Heeg earn top-20 finishes for Tigers

IOLA — The Stratford girls finished 10th and the boys 11th at the Iola-Scandinavia T-Bird Cross Country Invitational on Tuesday at Iola Winter Sports Park.

Freedom ran away with both team titles. The Irish boys scored 59 points, 52 points ahead of second-place Wausau East. Stratford was 11th with 271 points. The Freedom girls had the top two finishers and all five of its top runners in the top 10 to score 23 points. Winneconne was second with 121 points. Stratford finished 10th with 234.

James Heeg topped the Stratford boys, finishing 20th in 18:34.75. Isaac Thompson had the Tigers’ only other top-50 finish as he took 40th in 19:17.50. Jordan Straub of Wausau East won the boys race in 17:07.50, 22 seconds ahead of Iola-Scandinavia’s Joe Makovec.

Macie Schillinger led the Stratford girls by finishing 15th in 21:53.29. Angelia Verdone was 48th in 23:58.00. Freedom’s Jaci Hinz won the girls race in 19:54.36, less than 3 seconds ahead of teammate Lauren Vosters.

Stratford is off until Sept. 12 when it hosts its annual Tiger Invitational.
