Gordy’s Market closes in Spencer

MARSHFIELD — Chippewa Falls-based supermarket chain Gordy’s Market made the announcement Aug. 23 that it was closing its underperforming locations, including its store in Spencer.
Meanwhile, the chain is trying to strengthen its financial position and core business to continue serving its primary communities.
In a statement Gordy’s President Jeff Schafer said the move was in the best interest of the business, its customers and vendors, and the communities it serves. He also said the goal was to return to the company’s roots and run a smaller organization.
Gordy’s recently shut down stores in Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, and Hayward. Statements on those closures said the moves were part of a restructuring of the business aimed at improving Gordy’s remaining stores.
In late July Festival Foods announced its plan to acquire Gordy’s stores on Birch Street and N. Clairemont Avenue in Eau Claire and on East Clifton Street in Tomah.
Gordy’s has been in operation since 1966.
