Dan Maurer given John Christner Local Historian Award
For Hub City Times
MARSHFIELD — Each year as part of the city of Marshfield’s Historic Preservation Month activities, the recipient of the John Christner Local Historian Award is identified.
This year’s award was presented to local aviation historian Dan Maurer at the June 27 Marshfield Common Council meeting.
Maurer began to chronicle Marshfield’s aviation history for an article in the “The Marshfield Story,” a locally produced history book commemorating the city’s 125th Anniversary in 1997. Continuing his research efforts, he assembled two books: “Aviation History of Marshfield” and “Midstate Air Commuters & Midstate Airlines,” which are both available at the Everett Roehl Marshfield Public Library.
With his knowledge of local air history and a love of preserving that history in detail, Maurer has also created an aviation history exhibit of photographs and artifacts on display at the Marshfield Municipal Airport. He has given multiple presentations on the community’s aviation history.
John Christner loved Marshfield history and had a special affection for Marshfield’s downtown businesses. After his passing in 2004, Main Street Marshfield established the John Christner Local Historian Award as a means to recognize community members who continue Christner’s effort of preserving and sharing the community’s history.
