Marshfield Chaparrals baseball falls at home to Whittlesey
Chaps suffer first loss of season
By Steve Pilz
MARSHFIELD — The Whittlesey Reds hit four doubles en route to a 7-1 win over the Marshfield Chaparrals in a Dairyland League amateur baseball game Sunday afternoon at Jack Hackman Field.
The loss was the Chaparrals’ first of the season as they fall to 2-1 overall and in Dairyland play.
Jack Donahue took the hill for the Chaps in his first appearance of the season.
After an out in the first, the Reds got a pair of singles followed by a walk. A sacrifice fly to center scored a run, and the Reds were up 1-0.
Whittlesey added another run in the second before the Chaps got that run back in the bottom half of the inning. Sam Schwanebeck led off with a ground rule double to center field, Lucius Messerschmidt walked, and Alex Steines laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third, Ryan Metz drilled a single to score Schwanebeck with two outs, Bobby Pilz kept the inning alive when he was hit by a pitch, but the inning ended with a fly out to right field.
The Reds answered again getting a single run in the third to make it 3-1.
Whittlesey’s Brandon Loetscher threw nothing but zeros at the Chaps after that, giving way to a reliever in the eighth. Loetscher struck out two and walked three but surrendered just four hits and coaxed the Chaps into 10 ground outs.
The Reds chased Donahue from the game at the end of the fifth when they scored two more runs on a pair of doubles and an error.
But unlike Friday night when the Chaps’ bats were stagnant early and then came through in the clutch, they could only muster seven hits, leaving 11 runners on base.
Noah Panzer relieved Donahue and held the Reds down for the most part, allowing a pair of earned runs, five hits, and a walk with one strikeout in four innings pitched.
The Chaparrals will play again on Friday, June 2, at Jack Hackman Field against Stanley.
