Thorp upsets Spencer in WIAA Division 4 softball regional final

Rockets finish season 18-6

SPENCER — Thorp scored six runs over the final two innings to upset top-seed Spencer 7-6 in a WIAA Division 4 softball regional final Thursday at Spencer High School.

Spencer scored five times in the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead before Thorp responded with two runs in the sixth inning and four more in the top of the seventh to pull out the victory.

Thorp (13-10) moves on to a Division 4 sectional semifinal on May 30 at the winner of Friday’s game between Athens and Marathon. Spencer ends its season with an 18-6 record.

“Hats off to Thorp for a great comeback,” Spencer coach Jason Gorst said. “I am proud of our girls. I really enjoyed coaching thme this season, and I am thankful for all of the hard work they put it.”

Aryiah Schuh had two RBIs, and Sadie Mercier had two hits for the Rockets.

Tiffany Meinders took the loss for Spencer, striking out four and allowing nine hits and all seven runs, six of which were earned.

Kaitlyn Tyznik earned the win for Thorp, giving up one run in three innings of relief, and Megan Schesel hit a home run for the Cardinals.
