Marshfield boys tennis wins conference tournament, overall Valley championship

Tigers win three flights, take second in two others

WAUSAU — Marshfield won one singles and a pair of doubles titles on its way to capturing the conference championship on Friday at the Wisconsin Valley Conference Boys Tennis Tournament at Wausau East High School.

The Tigers racked up 31 points to win the tournament title, and combined with its regular-season dual meet crown, Marshfield is the overall WVC champ.

Braedon Corteen won the title at No. 4 singles for the Tigers, beating Siam Rezwan of Wausau East 2-6, 6-2, 10-7 in the championship match.

Marshfield’s No. 1 doubles team of Derek Reckner and Jared Cordova cruised to the conference title, beating Josh Beyer of Shane Glinski of Wisconsin Rapids 6-2, 7-5 in the championship match.

Marshfield’s other title came from the No. 2 doubles team of brothers John Fay and Will Fay. They defeated Angus Blakeman and Carter Smigaj of Stevens Point 6-2, 6-2 in the title match.

Sam Haessly (No. 2 singles) and Erick Myklejord (No. 3 singles) finished second, the No. 3 doubles team of Ayush Shukla and Luke Kaiser was third, and Evan Fait (No. 1 singles) took fourth for Marshfield.

Marshfield will compete in the WIAA Division 1 subsectional at Tomah on Monday.

Championship: Luke Bailey (WW) def. Jon Peck (SP) 6-1, 2-6, 10-4.

Third place: Sawyer Schlindwein (WE) def. Evan Fait (MAR) 2-6, 6-2, 12-0.

Fifth place: Ryan Graczkowski (WR) def. Eli Lee (DC) 6-0, 6-1.

No. 2 singles

Championship: Harrison Sullivan (WR) def. Sam Haessly (MAR) 7-5, 2-0 (injury)

Third place: Gray Clohessy (WE) def. Ryan Begley (DC) 5-7, 6-2, 10-8.

Fifth place: Tate Raumann (WW) def. Treyton Zinda (SP) 6-1, 6-2.

No. 3 singles

Championship: Grant Seils (WE) def. Eric Myklejord (MAR) 6-3, 6-4.

Third place: Tim Cornish (DC) def. Ryan Guay (SP) 6-1, 6-0.

Fifth place: Josh Patrick (WW) def. Marcus Bean (WR) injury default.

No. 4 singles

Championship: Braedon Corteen (MAR) def. Siam Rezwan (WE) 2-6, 6-2, 10-7.

Third place: Aidan McManus (SP) def. Stevie Hanzlik (WR) 7-5, 6-1.

Fifth place: Will Brown (WW) def. Brayton Herwig (DC) 6-1, 6-0.

No. 1 doubles

Championship: Derek Reckner-Jared Cordova (MAR) def. Josh Beyer-Shane Glinski (WR) 6-2, 7-5.

Third place: Patrick Hefferan-Garrek Wierzba (SP) def. Lucas Ratanawang-Steven Martell (WE) 6-3, 6-4.

Fifth place: James Radloff-Preston Pagel (DC) def. Feuchi Yang-Luke Halvorsen (WW) 7-5, 6-1.

No. 2 doubles

Championship: John Fay-Will Fay (MAR) def. Angus Blakeman-Carter Smigaj (SP) 6-2, 6-2.

Third place: Eddy Xiong-Ben Brown (WW) def. Elkin Thao-Neil Biswas (WE) 2-6, 6-1, 10-7.

Fifth place: Jack Veer-Jack Povilaitis (DC) def. Reed Zirnheld-Brady Knuteson (WR) 3-6, 6-0, 10-5.

No. 3 doubles

Championship: Mario Duwe-Noah Briquelet-Miller (WE) def. John Nigon-Jackson Butler (WR) 6-4, 6-0.

Third place: Ayush Shukla-Luke Kaiser (MAR) def. Eli Haas-Ryan Martin (SP) 6-4, 6-2.

Fifth place: Nathan Evers-Wesley Spitzer (WW) def. Aaron Leszezynski-Danny Cornish (DC) 1-6, 6-3, 10-6.

Overall final team standings: 1. Marshfield 85; 2. Wausau East 76; 3. Wisconsin Rapids 57; 4. Stevens Point 46; 5. Wausau West 33; 6. D.C. Everest 25.
