The groundbreaking ceremony for the Colby Community Library occurred on May 1.

COLBY — Ground was broken May 1 for the new Colby library. The library will reside at 505 W. Spence St. in Colby and will replace the Colby Public Library’s current facility located in Colby City Hall.

The anonymous donors whose contribution qualified them to name the new library chose to rename it the Colby Community Library.

In relaying a message from the unidentified benefactors, Colby Public Library Director Vicky Calmes said, “We have followed the library’s various programs throughout the year. We noticed that the activities sponsored by the library are always involving different groups in the community — from infants to preschoolers to students and teens to adults. So rather than naming the building after a person or after a family or after an organization or after a business, we thought it should be named after the people it serves in the present and will serve in the future: the Colby community.”

The $2.2 million construction project is scheduled to be completed in November 2017.
