MARSHFIELD — Students from Marshfield Columbus Catholic High School traveled to St. John The Baptist Primary School on March 2 to perform their annual Theater in the Square.

Each year Columbus foreign language students prepare plays they deliver in French and then English or Spanish and then English for the elementary students. The children sit in the middle of the gym floor as the four plays are performed around them, giving the event the name Theater in the Square.

The plays performed by the French classes included “Sleeping Beauty” and an interpretation of “Five Monkeys Jumping on the Bed.” The Spanish classes’ plays were “The Mitten” and “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.”

“Sleeping Beauty is actually an exchange student from Poland,” explained Deb Kennedy. “She speaks four languages. She was also in my Spanish play ‘The Mitten.’

“We perform the plays each year for all the students at St. John. It is our effort to get them excited about learning new languages. When they get to Our Lady of Peace, they have Spanish lessons twice a week in grades three, four, and five. Then in the middle school and high school, they may study French or Spanish.”

The productions were part of Columbus Schools’ World Language Week events.
