AUBURNDALE — On Feb. 22 Katherine Seibel walked Auburndale fourth-grade students up to the school forest and tapped maple trees with Mark Cournoyer and some of his FFA and agri-science students. The high school students gave a large group presentation of how to tap a tree and what tools are used.

The fourth-graders then broke into groups and went into the woods with a high school student, and everyone was able to tap a tree and taste some sap. Students learned how to use a sap hydrometer and drill and pounded a spile into a tree to hang their bags. Jenna Snorthiem, Cole Babcock, and Cody Trowbridge also assisted in teaching the fourth-graders about this activity.

This was the second year of Auburndale’s annual tree tapping in the school forest. The sap will be collected and cooked down to be served at the 57th Annual FFA Pancake Feed on March 26.
