MADISON — Marshfield sophomores Nolan Hertel and Sam Mitchell were eliminated from the 2017 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament after losing Division 1 consolation bracket matches Friday morning at the Kohl Center.

Hertel (32-11) lost 3-1 to Waterford senior Austin Thomas (22-6) at 145 pounds, and Mitchell (25-16) was pinned by Kaukauna sophomore Bryson Alsteen (42-8) at 170 pounds.

For Hertel, it marks the second-straight season he qualified for the state meet. Mitchell was making his debut at the tournament.

Hertel used an escape midway through the third period to close to within 3-1 and was close to earning a takedown in the final seconds, but Thomas was able to hold him off.

Alsteen used a takedown and a nearfall early in the first period to take a quick 4-0 lead and had takedowns in the second and third periods to go up 8-0 before pinning Mitchell with 56 seconds to go.

Wrestling will continue Friday with Division 2 and 3 quarterfinals starting at approximately 11:15 a.m. Consolation matches follow for Division 1 at 1:45 p.m. and Divisions 2 and 3 at 2:45 p.m. with semifinals in all three divisions at 7 p.m.
