WAUSAU — The Marshfield girls basketball team’s bid for a second-straight Wisconsin Valley Conference championship came up one basket short as the Tigers lost their finale to Wausau West 61-59 in overtime on Thursday night at Wausau West High School.

The Tigers finish the regular season with a 13-9 record and a 9-3 mark in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. D.C. Everest, which came into play Thursday tied with Marshfield for first place in the standings, beat Wisconsin Rapids 58-45 to clinch sole possession of the Valley crown. Wausau West (14-7 overall) ends up tied with Marshfield for second place at 9-3.

Marshfield led 28-26 at halftime before West rallied to tie the game at the end of regulation and outscored the Tigers 8-6 in the extra period to pull out the win.

Marshfield hung in the game by making 16 of 22 free throws, including 10 of 14 from Ema Fehrenbach. However, the Tigers shot just 37 percent (20 of 53) from the floor and missed 12 of their 15 3-point attempts.

Fehrenbach led the Tigers with 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Maddie Nikolai and Meg Bryan each added 10 points.

Marshfield will play at Chippewa Falls in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal on Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WDLB-AM 1450 and wdlbwosq.com.
