Free throws lead Marshfield girls basketball past Merrill

Tigers make 24 of 33 at free throw line to pull out road win

MERRILL — Marshfield made 24 of 33 free throws and used a strong second half to top Merrill 62-52 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference girls basketball game Tuesday night at Merrill High School.

The win is the Tigers’ seventh in a row in the conference, and they improve to 9-7 overall and 7-1 in the WVC. Merrill drops to 9-7 and 3-6 in the Valley.

Marshfield shot 48 percent (19 of 40) from the field and held a 24-9 advantage at the free throw line to pull out the victory.

The game was tied 25-25 at halftime before the Tigers pulled away in the second half, mainly at the line.

Jenna Jakobi had 15 points, seven rebounds, and six assists for Marshfield. She made 7 of 9 free throw attempts. Ema Fehrenbach had a team-high 20 points for the Tigers, going 8 of 13 from the field, and Maddie Nikolai chipped in with 15 points as she made 7 of 8 free throws.

Patience Pyan scored 16 points to lead Merrill.

Marshfield returns to action Friday at home against D.C. Everest. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m.
