MARATHON — The Auburndale girls basketball team gave Marawood Conference South Division front-runner Marathon all it could handle but fell short in the end, losing 43-34 on Tuesday night at Marathon High School.

Marathon led 19-16 after a low-scoring first half and held on from there with a six-point advantage in the second period. The Raiders are now 14-3 overall and 9-1 in the Marawood South, one-half game ahead of Wausau Newman Catholic. Auburndale drops to 8-8 and 4-5 in the conference.

Mackenzie Raab scored 10 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for Auburndale, which had eight different players find the scoring column. Hannah Bolder added seven points in the loss.

Alysha Stieber had 17 points for Marathon.

Auburndale will host Northland Lutheran on Friday.
