First-place Tigers 5-1 in WVC

STEVENS POINT — Ema Fehrenbach scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds to help the Marshfield girls basketball team to a 56-55 victory over Stevens Point on Tuesday night at Stevens Point Area Senior High.

The win, Marshfield’s fifth in a row, avenges a loss earlier this season to Stevens Point, its only one in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. The Tigers are now 7-6 overall and in first place in Valley at 5-1. Point drops to 6-9 and 4-3 in the WVC.

Marshfield won despite 17 turnovers and shooting only 52 percent (11 of 21) at the free throw line as it held SPASH to 40 percent shooting from the floor and just 3 of 16 from 3-point range. The Tigers were 21 of 42 from the field.

Marshfield coach Heidi Michaelis said the game was tight throughout with numerous swings. “I’m always happy to get a win at Point,” she said.

Maddie Nikolai added 11 points, and Meg Bryan hit three 3-pointers to finish with nine points for the Tigers.

Marshfield will host Wisconsin Rapids as part of a girls-boys doubleheader Friday. The girls game begins at 6 p.m., and the boys follow at 7:45 p.m.
