Greta M. Meyers, 82, Marshfield, died surrounded by her family on Sunday, Oct. 30, 2016 at House of the Dove.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, 2016 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Marshfield, with Rev. Eric Berns officiating. Burial will take place in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. The visitation will be held on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until service time at Our Lady of Peace Church. Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Greta Mary Gripentrog was born on Thursday, Feb. 15, 1934 to Herbert F. and Leone (Bast) Gripentrog, Sr. She grew up in the Town of Lincoln with her five brothers and one sister where the Gripentrog family owned and operated the West Marshfield Cheese Factory. Greta attended a one room school house, Shady Lane School and later St. John’s Catholic School in Marshfield. She graduated from Marshfield Senior High School in 1951.

While attending high school, she met the love of her life, Victor M. Meyers. Vic entered the U.S. Navy after graduation. They were married in California on Thursday, Aug. 27, 1953, and recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. While Vic was serving our country in Korea, Greta attended St. Joseph School of Nursing, and later worked in that capacity at St. Joseph’s Hospital until she retired in 1996, and volunteered for many years later. Many patients through the years benefited from Greta’s services on the Rehab unit where she offered care for those in need with her natural gift of sincere compassion.

Following her retirement, Greta continued to thoroughly enjoy life with Vic, her six children, and always welcomed visits with her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Coming from a very close family herself, she taught her children that family was the greatest gift in life! Greta always insisted on hosting Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving holiday family celebrations and tasty meals in her house. The entire family enjoyed many memorable July 4th weekends on Solberg Lake in Price County, where she and Vic loved to spend relaxing time alone on warm summer days.

Greta liked to read and worked to solve the most challenging crossword puzzles. She also liked to tend to her flowers and plants in the yard. But her favorite pastime was playing bridge, sometimes several days a week with her special friends. If they weren’t available, she would deal the cards and play each hand herself. No family gathering with her siblings and in-laws was complete without playing marathon Sheepshead games with diamonds trump.

Greta is survived by her loving husband, Vic, their daughter, Vicki Ann Meyers of DePere; their five sons, Michael (Bonnie) Meyers, Marshfield, and their children, Justin Meyers and Elizabeth (Will) Garton; Mark (Lynn) Meyers, Platteville and children Matthew (Heidi) Meyers, Ryan Meyers and Sara Meyers; Thomas (Susan) Meyers, Minocqua and daughter Nicki (Matt) Pekarske; David (Donna) Meyers, Marshfield and their children Kale (Michelle) Kernz, Holly (AJ) Thomson, Jordan Meyers, Joseph Meyers and Jacob Meyers; and Steven J. Sr. (Susan) Meyers, Green Bay and their children Steven Meyers, Jr., Brittany Meyers, Rachel Meyers and Kendra Meyers. Greta will be greatly missed by her 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Greta is further survived by her brother Ted (Ardene) Gripentrog, Marshfield and her sister Judy (Dee) Fleming, Henderson, NV; and sisters-in-law, Trudy Gripentrog, Jo Gripentrog and Babs Hintz. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, and in-laws: Herbert (Susan) Gripentrog, Jr.; Neale (Eunice) Gripentrog; Raymond Gripentrog; and Earl Gripentrog.

“There’s a special place in heaven for a mother of five boys.”

In lieu of flowers memorials may be designated in Greta’s name to House of the Dove, Marshfield.
