Marshfield, Columbus Catholic to host regional semifinals

The brackets and first-round matches for the 2016 WIAA boys soccer playoffs have been released.

Play begins with a handful of regional quarterfinals in Divisions 3 and 4 on Tuesday, Oct. 18. Regional semifinals in all four divisions are set for Thursday, Oct. 20, with regional finals on Saturday, Oct. 22.

Sectionals will be played Thursday, Oct. 27, and Saturday, Oct. 29, and the survivors move on to the 2016 WIAA State Boys Soccer Tournament at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee on Nov. 3-5.

Locally, Marshfield (10-7-3) earned a No. 2 seed in the bottom half of the Division 2 Sectional 1 bracket and will host No. 7 Rhinelander (11-6-2) in a regional semifinal at 4 p.m. Thursday at Griese Park. The Tigers beat Rhinelander 5-1 back on Sept. 27. Rhinelander won the Great Northern Conference title with an 8-0-2 mark.

In Division 4, Marshfield Columbus Catholic (18-2), champions of the Mid-State Soccer Conference, earned a No. 1 seed in the bottom half of the Division 4 Sectional 1 bracket. The Dons will play the winner of the Nekoosa-Tri-County regional quarterfinal at 4 p.m. Thursday at Griese Park.
