SPENCER — The Marshfield boys had their best finish in 15 years at the 2016 Wisconsin Valley Conference Cross Country Meet on Saturday at Frey Field.

The host Tigers had their top five all finish in the top 22, led by juniors Jared Oemig and Jordan Dzikowich, who finished 10th and 11th, respectively. Oemig ran the 5-kilometer course in 17:37.8, and Dzikowich was 2.3 seconds behind.

The team finish was the best for the Tigers boys since taking second in 2001.

Stevens Point continued its dominance, winning the boys team title for the 29th-straight year and the 39th time in the last 40 conference meets. The Panthers had their five runners all finish in the top seven to earn 22 points. Marshfield had 81, four better than D.C. Everest.

The Point girls won the team title for the fifth year in a row, totaling 27 points with five runners in the top nine.

The Marshfield girls finished sixth. Junior Sophia Schrodi was 19th for the Tigers’ top finish, running the course in 21:31.4.

Derek Franz of Stevens Point was the boys champion (16:26.3), and Wausau West sophomore Brooke Jaworski won her second-straight girls individual title (19:26.8). Franz finished third last year.

Marshfield will compete at the WIAA Division 1 sectional on Saturday, Oct. 22, at Standing Rock Park in Stevens Point. The boys race is at 11 a.m., and the girls follow at 12:15 p.m.
