Columbus Catholic boys second, girls third at Cloverbelt Conference Cross Country Meet

Spencer girls finish sixth

STANLEY — Marshfield Columbus Catholic had a strong showing at the 2016 Cloverbelt Conference Cross Country Meet on Saturday at Oriole Park with the boys finishing second and the girls third in the team standings.

Altoona ran away with the boys team title with five top-10 finishes and 27 points. Columbus was second with 71 points, led by Josh Guyer, who finished ninth in 18:34.37.

Benny Frericks was 11th (18:39), Jeremiah Giles 13th (18:45) and Peyton Nystrom 17th (18:56), giving the Dons four in the top 20.

The Spencer boys finished 11th out of the 12 teams competing. Brett Kasch topped the Rockets, taking 43rd in 20:28.90.

Colby/Abbotsford won the girls team title in a tightly-packed race with 103 points. Neillsville was second with 114, one point ahead of Columbus Catholic and three in front of fourth-place Chippewa Falls McDonell. Spencer was sixth.

Melanie Lang led the Dons, finishing seventh in 22:07.98. Teammate Hailey Roehl placed 13th in 22:59.65.

Kailey Northup took 17th in 23:15.49 for the Spencer girls.

Spencer and Columbus Catholic will run at the WIAA Division 3 sectional Friday at Nine Mile Recreation Area in Rib Mountain. The boys race starts at 4 p.m. with the girls to follow at 4:45 p.m.
