Ruby B. Heckel, 87, Marshfield, died peacefully with family by her side Monday, Aug. 8, 2016, at Wells Nature View Assisted Living, Marshfield.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2016, at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church with Rev. Eric Berns officiating. Burial will take place in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. The visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at Rembs Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until time of service Friday at Our Lady of Peace Church. There will be a Parish Council of Catholic Women rosary service at 7 p.m, Thursday at the funeral home.

Ruby was born on September 2, 1928 in the Town of Day, Marathon County, to Ed and Viola (Bodendorfer) Nelson.

Ruby married Thomas Sternweis, June 11, 1947. He died in November 1955. She then married Alvin W. Heckel, July 19, 1958, at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Marshfield. He died May 14, 2013.

Ruby farmed in the Town of Lincoln and still worked in the barn until June of this year. She was very involved in 4-H for over 40 years and was the leader of Shady Lane 4-H for 35 years. She had been a member of the Ebbe Ladies Aid and had received the Volunteer of the Year Award in Marshfield. She enjoyed cooking, baking and canning. She also enjoyed time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Richard (Nancy) Sternweis, Diana (Mike) McMeeken, all of Stratford, Gordon Sternweis, Paul (Bonnie) Sternweis, all of Marshfield, Sharon (Randy) Follen of Vesper, Karen (Rick) Rhodes and Dennis Heckel, all of Marshfield. She is further survived by 19 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, 3 expected great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. She is further survived by 2 sisters, Carol Harriman of Marshfield and Nila Vanderhoof of Arpin.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husbands, 2 grandsons, Dickie Sternweis and Tom McMeeken, 2 brothers Gerald Nelson and Ed “Pete” Nelson, Jr. and a sister, Audrey Kampin.

The family wishes to thank the staffs of Ministry Home Hospice Care and Wells Nature View for their loving care.

The family will designate a memorial in Ruby’s name at a later date.
