Marshfield’s Wojt qualifies for sectionals in three events at WIAA Division 1 track regional

Tigers claim 13 spots in all for Thursday’s sectional

WAUSAU — Marshfield had six athletes and three relay teams qualify for sectionals in a total of 13 events by earning top-four finishes at the WIAA Division 1 Track & Field Regional on Monday at Wausau West High School.

The top four in each event at the regional move on to the Division 1 sectional on Thursday at D.C. Everest High School. The top three in each event at the sectional qualify for the 2016 WIAA State Track & Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on June 3-4.

Marshfield senior Calden Wojt will compete in three events at the sectional after finishing in the top three in each on Monday. Wojt won the 200 meters in 22.66 seconds, was second in the 400 in 50.79, and finished third in the 100 in 11.63 for the Tigers boys’ top three finishes.

Also moving on for the Marshfield boys is Adam Elhendy-Gunnarsson, who was fourth in the 200 in 23.66 seconds.

Junior Alexa Aumann and senior Courtney Brown finished second and third, respectively, in the girls 400 to move on. Aumann finished in 1:01.24 and Brown in 1:01.73 for the Tigers. Aumann was also fourth in the 800 (2:26.57) to qualify for sectionals.

Freshman Shantel Nienast took third in the high jump (4 feet 9 inches), and sophomore Meg Bryan was third in the long jump (16-11 ¾) to earn Marshfield’s other individual sectional spots.

Also moving on are three girls relay teams for Marshfield. The 1,600 team of Aumann, Dani Bender, Mariah Goeppinger, and Brown was third in 4:15.36; the 3,200 team of Lilly O’Brien, Jocie Anderson, Maddison Clemens, and Sophia Schrodi finished fourth in 11:32.60; and the 800 team of Angelina Dunomes, Kessa Schreiner, Nienast, and Bender took fourth in 1:53.88.

The Marshfield boys were fifth and the girls sixth in the team standings. Both titles were won by Stevens Point.
