MARATHON — Marathon scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge Stratford 6-5 in a battle of the top two teams in the Marawood Conference South Division softball standings on Monday.

Stratford fought back from a 4-1 deficit to tie the game with two runs in the fifth inning and another in the sixth.

The game remained tied at 4-4 until the ninth when the Tigers plated a run to take the lead.

However, Marathon came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to win it and overtake the Tigers for first place in the Marawood South.

Marathon is now 13-3 overall and 9-1 in the conference, and Stratford drops to 13-6 and 9-2 in the Marawood South.

Stratford plays at Wisconsin Rapids Assumption (7-2 in the conference) on Tuesday in its final conference game. Marathon hosts Newman Catholic on Thursday.

Lorrie Luepke went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, and Sammy Griesbach and Brittany Bredemann each added two hits for the Tigers.

Julia Anderson hit a home run and drove in three for Marathon.
